folding press.

Okay so my blog posts are readily turning into summaries of the large amounts of guest lectures that have been going on in my architecture school over the past month. This week we have over 5 - completely looking forward to Peter Stutchbury's visit later on today!
Yesterday we had Mark Simpson, director of Universal Design Studio in Melbourne, pay us a visit. Universal Design Studio, much like the previously mentioned Russell + George, are a design consultancy with a multi-disciplinary approach towards the design of branded environments. The studio will be relaunched as Design Office in October this year.
Cue one of my favourite things Mark spoke about; [aside from the incredible folded steel stair recently completed for Corporate Culture].
Folding Press: a paper installation as part of Melbourne's Saturday in Design festival in 2008. the clients were Design Quarterly and Indesign Magazine, with a budget of $1000 and an unlimited supply to past copies of magazines - the studio created this installation. Isn't it incredible?! [Ella - the paper-folding reminds me of you!].
The magazine pages were cut into a square, folded into this specific origami form due to the contrast between the shell and the interior, playing with the colours of the magazine pages which were also sorted pre-folding. It took hours to make, and 35 rolls of double sided tape to join and attach to the plywood backing.
I want one. No really.

aesop bondi beach.

I have decided my career goal is to design an Aesop store. I came across this store [Aesop Bondi Beach by Japanese born architect Zenta Tanaka] for the first time whilst googling reclaimed wharf timber for montages for my Professional Project...

russell + george.

St Judes, Brunswick St, Melbourne [I LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS PLACE!!!]

Mister Close, Bourke St, Melbourne

Earl Canteen, Bourke St [aka world's fanciest sandwiches].
Yesterday at school we were lucky enough to have a guest lecture Ryan Russell and Byron George of Russell + George. Just quietly, I personally think it is fantastic when you meet people within the profession whose work you love and completely admire [see previous post about Ryan Russell's retail fit out for LEFT] - and they turn out to be utterly amazing. I was also lucky enough to have a one on one tutorial with the pair after the guest lecture - you can see why they work so well together, they bounce ideas of each other.
There was one thing the pair said when describing their work, and the way in which they work - which completely resonated with me. Within their studio, they don't distinguish between disciplines, they consider everyone designers. They design everything - the structure, the interior, the furniture, the branding - everything. For example, they told us they are designing paper bags for one of their retail clients at the moment.
I loved this idea! Brilliant. And completely reassures me that I can design other things apart from buildings upon graduation ha! Cue Jenna once again lusting over pictures of their work...

raw colour.

Apologies for my awol-ness [oh golly it's begun - I've started making up words] we have a mega review with out external examiners on Thursday so I have been drawing and model making furiously* so I can get the most out of the interim crit.
Things are hectic around here. Here is a picture that I love but I have no where it is from unfortunately - found it tumbling through the blogs on tumblr this week...
*I seem to be incapable of making quick [aka messy] models. They always look too neat and final so I unleashed this week and banned myself from UHU glue. Big mistake. My model is currently being held together with masking tape - hopefully I don't sneeze before Thursday because it will totally collapse...[ha don't worry going to make it properly tomorrow afternoon...]
Update: the new google image search saved the day - Image found via the project Raw Colour - take a look over here for more information!

the social studio.

I just got an email from one of my favourite places to visit in Melbourne - The Social Studio on Smith St.

The Social Studio describes itself as 'a dynamic space where clothing is created from the style and skills of the young refugee community, transforming recycled and excess manufacturing materials into original design. The enterprise creates training and employment opportunities in fashion and hospitality while being a safe place of belonging that strives to create awareness and change public perceptions'. This Thursday night, The Social Studio is hosting its Spring Fashion Gala launching its Magic Tent collection at the BMW Edge @ Fed Square.

Now, as I cannot attend do to uni - let me live vicariously through those of you in Melbourne who can! - not only are the clothes and accessories beautifully and lovingly hand made, but it is a fantastic contribution to community development and meaningful social change through the up-cylcling of 100% reclaimed materials.

Pop on over to their website or drop in to have a look at their Studio to find out more. Very very cool.

thesis draft - tick.

Ladies and gentlemen, we have a finalised honours thesis draft!
Cue ferocious round of applause...
[In all honesty I think I have lost the ability to construct proper spoken sentences in attempt to save all my well-thought out sentences for writing. ie I am walking around super vague. This picture pretty much sums up me for the past week - ie paper bag with cloud on head: analogy for me living in my own little world/me turning into an airhead].

There is something about the colours in these posters that makes me swoon. Love.

spring.

To celebrate the first day of spring, my lovely bestie Batman [there you go Summa, keeping up my end of the deal] took me on a lady date-study break [8919 words of thesis down and counting!]. At least the sun was as delicious as the food!
This week I have been completely inspired by this beautiful blog, whose author Rohan is this week's guest blogger over at The Design Files. I have actually planted my roma tomato seedlings in recycled annalisa diced tomato tins also [ha the irony] ready to pop into the garden when the time is right - along side the rocket and basil and other yummy deliciousness.
